We're headed back to Exhibition Park again this morning for another day of working the Street. Yesterday and last night flew by! We met some great artists and crafters, chatted with good friends, got the juice on some interesting happenings, and got to listen to some awesome music. Plus, we completed 5 (6?) new dolls, including a spectacular boy super hero. Pictures taken and will be shared once all is complete.

Hello there!

I'm no longer selling on Etsy, and quite a few months ago some of the other members of this Team contacted me to take over leadership, which is just fine by me :) However, I'm still receiving membership requests which I just don't have time to deal with.

With the migration to the new Teams area on Etsy (which I confess I know nothing about, except that it's happening), maybe this would be the perfect time to really switch leaders?

Asking for some help

Hi Guys,

Its been a while since I've been around. Its been a busy, crazy, not-nearly-crafty-enough kind of year. Life has pulled me in so many directions - fun, amazing and sometimes heartbreaking as it may have been I haven't had time to focus on etsy, or the street team.

I'm hoping I might be able to ask for some assistance. I need someone who can help set up new members. Give them the ability to post, add their etsy shop & blog links. Its not overly time consuming, however requests have slipped through the cracks as of late and I don't want to deny anyone the opportunity to join simply because I'm too wrapped up in my own world.

I just finished reading this great new book by Kari Chapin, How to Sell Your Crafts Locally, Globally and Online. Its illustrated by Emily Martin of Black Apple etsy fame. I wish this resource had been around a few years ago- its absolutely packed with tips and knowledge an indie crafter needs to be successful, and covers everything from marketing basics, social media, craft fairs (even a packing list!), to blogging, selling in brick and mortar stores, and basic business practices. Its an easy read, with wisdom and real life advice straight from other crafters. This is the kind of knowledge it takes years to accumulate if you're trying to do it on your own. Whether you're brand new at selling your work, or a seasoned crafter, you'll find this book invaluable.

I'm sure you've noticed that things just aren't the same, we've been drifting apart. We used to be so happy together, but now, I find myself constantly thinking about other ways to occupy my day. And I know that you feel the same way about me. It shows in the little things, like how you don't consider my feelings when you schedule me to work weekend and night shifts (you know I'm not a night person), and in the way we barely tolerate each other when there are craft shows to prepare for and etsy orders to mail out. I'm sorry it has to be this way. I will miss your security, and steady pay cheque, your willingness to help out with pesky dental bills and your status of having "a real career". It will be better for both of us if we just stop seeing each other. I hope that you will be able to find someone who can give you what you need. I will pack up my things by the end of the week.

Happy New Year! Hope 2010 is a happy and prosperous year for you all.

Any resolutions for your etsy shop? Any words of advice? Lessons learned in 2009?

We do have two new members this week! Welcome to Angela from Lalaandgleen (from NS) and Sandy from Andromedia (from NB). Check out their shops on the right, both have gorgeous shops and awesome items. I'm stoked to go take another look around!

I have to confess, I'm getting a bit slack and even with all the requests, we didn't make salad tongs for Christmas and don't have any plans for making more in the near future. My heart hasn't been in it, and if my heart isn't in it, really, what's the point? I have been crocheting up a storm, stocking up my goodie box, but I'm holding off on new listings.

Not sure if you've heard but Rob, the original founder and CEO of etsy, is back in the house and they have some big changes planned for 2010. I'm happy, but nervous all at the same time. One of the first changes made in 2010 was the removal of the gift guides. You can read some Q&A here and there are more in this forum.

Brr getting colder out there today. Actually we've had a great run of weather really. Imagine being in Alberta this last week -47! Just popping in to add a bit of winter cheer:) Hope every one is busy and healthy and happy!

Also, if you near Clayton Park......this Saturday Dec 19th, the HalifaxChicks BustaMove team is having a pancake breakfast 8:30-12:00 at the Clayton Park Sobeys to raise money for new digital mammography machines. A fun event to mark on your calendars and help a great cause.

So glad to see some action on this blog. There is so much potential here. I have lately been thinking how the best promotion is local promotion. Everyone loves to know what's going on in their neighbourhood. I wonder if for starters all the members of this team could be notified by e-mail that there's some action here. I think most people stopped even looking,. My other thought for helping each other out is maybe doing an exchange feature where at least once a month we feature something from one of the team member's shops on our own personal blogs. So many great artists here in the Atlantic Provinces. Looking forward to discovering their work.

Sea Pottery Happiness

We did Christmas at the Forum on the weekend, which was a great show. We met lots of people, sharing their sea glass stories. One lovely lady and her daughter studied our sea pottery collection and casually mentioned that she recognized the patterns of some of our floral pieces, and that she had the china at home in her attic! The china belonged to the Victoria General Hospital, back in the day when hospitals served patients on real china and not styrofoam and plastic. The VG has since been amalgamated into a larger Health Centre.

I was so excited that I rambled on to everyone who stopped by the booth for the rest of the day (sorry people, but thanks for listening). And thank you to the kind lady who rescued the saucers from her attic, you made my day!

Etsy Atlantic Trades & Member Discounts

Good Morning everyone!

It is a gorgeous day already. I had to leave work early yesterday as my babysitter and one of her little girls may have H1N1 and my kiddo couldn't go there after her preschool. We made the most of it by heading to the park with friends and a mug of peppermint tea. The sunshine felt glorious and the kids had so much fun. We've been heading to bed earlier than usual lately, I find the dark coming early has us going into hibernation mode. I've got to snap out of that! I've got a lot of Christmas gifts to finish up.

On that note, I thought I'd follow up on Ashton's trading offer. I'd be open to trades as well, if anyone is interested just send me an email and let me know. I'm always looking for extra special goodies to add to my gifts, and for the last two years we've managed to give 90% handmade! I'd also like to offer 15% off my shop to any Etsy Atlantic members! Would anyone else like to offer? I was thinking I could start a list on the side bar of member to member offers and those open to trade. Could be a great way to find to get your Christmas shopping completed!

I've also been made admin. Back a few years ago, DangerousMezzo and I were some of the original members who decided to start the blog, and she is taking a break from etsy and artfire. If you have any questions, suggestions or would like to be added to the blog, just let me know.

Hello! It's nice to see people posting on this again! Some people e-mailed me awhile ago trying to add them to the list so they can post, but I can't do it since I didn't start this blog? Or i just haven't figured it out yet. Can anyone speak up to who's the one who can add people? I think having the new people will be great!

I still have the money. I've been trying to see what people want done with it, so please please PLEASE write me so we can figure it out. Etsy wants the receipts, but i can't send them because I don't have any! So $200 people we can spend on whatever! If i don't hear back soon from anyone I'm going to send it back to etsy. :(. The Holidays are coming!

Well its been a while. I've been married, changed names and emails and have been unable to log in to post. I resorted today to using my old email to catch up.

The holidays are coming on etsy and I've been busy getting ahead of the rush, stocking up on boxes and bows and pretty packaging for my orders. The rush has already begun!

What are your plans to keep up?

I've been advertising (Check out project wonderful!) and was featured in the Gift Guides twice in this past month which both help draw people in. We've also started printing poster sheets to take to our day jobs, and each year we receive nearly as many orders from the men in the office looking for something great for their wives :) Early this fall I set up my fan page on Facebook which has generated a number of sales (although to my dismay, in my distraction I misspelled my own name... which, sadly, is a permanent mistake haha)

I hit up the Dollar Store and got some Christmas tissue paper, and headed to Michaels for some pretty ribbon. I often get requests to gift wrap items and ship directly to the customer's recipitent. I wanted to be more than prepared this year.

Let us know if you have any great marketing tips and ideas for promoting! I'd love to hear some new ones and what works for you! Hopefully someone can help me set up my new email so I can post from there, let me know if that's something I could help with so we can keep the blog current!

Hi everybody! This is such a quiet group. When I look down through the entries it is like the aliceinparis show! How can we liven this up? Also, AshtonsArt won a wee grant for us, we should take advantage of it. A get together of some sort would be nice. A sale, brainstorming, tea, party, meeting or all of the above at one time:)

I am posting today because I have entered a contest! The I love Nova Scotia contest. I have collected vintage handkerchiefs and am constantly amazed at the beauty and work that went into such a tiny object. Hello All, Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Anna Shoub and I am a mad hatter living in beautiful Lunenburg, NS. We moved here in July from NY state, by way of Massachusetts, by way of Toronto, by way of Montreal. It gets so complicated after a while. We are here to stay though. I can't think of a more beautiful place on earth. I have a four year old son and a wonderful wood worker husband. When choosing, Lunenburg as a home, I was looking for the small town experience and boy did I get it. First of all , I would like to say thanks for including me in your team. My name is Lori Stewart. I live on the south shore with my blacklab Willow. We have been collecting beach glass since 2002. I started to make jewelry with it about 3 years ago . I find it relaxing to make something out of things I've picked up along the beach. It's amazing feeling to know that someone in the world buys your piece and loves to wear it. String Me Along is a jewellery maker from Toronto now living in Moncton. She makes really pretty pieces like the Migratory Patterns necklace shown above!

Anna Shoub describes herself as a "hat junkie"! She lives in Lunenburg, NS where she makes amazing pieces like the hat shown above.

Wild Wicked Beads is a maker/designer and teacher of bead work who lives in Halifax, NS with her spoiled cat :) The beaded cuff pictured above is an example of her extraordinary work.

Handkn it Hugs is in Quispamsis, NB, where she knits beautiful pieces like the A-Z Baby Initial Sweater above. So cute!

Nova Scotia Beach Gl ass and Willow Black Lab are run by Lori who lives in Shelburne County, NS, where she walks her black lab, Willow on the beaches collecting raw materials for her work, which includes the Natural Rock Pendant, seen above.

Art of the Moment lives in Rexton, NB where she works in oils, watercolours and fused glass. The fused glass pendant, above, is a sample of her colourful work.

Marshall Arts is from Newfoundland. She's a handweaver, and the above photo is of her gorgeous hand-woven, hand-dyed, hand-felted Seaweed Scarf.

Newly listed last week and sold within the week. DM's primitive black cats are now taggers! Painting it all black, highlighting it with brilliant acrylics.

The Maritime humidity continues, but the dawn, my fave time of the day offers such fabulous light opportunities. I am busy gathering ideas and materials and photos for an encaustic workshop I am taking from Lynn Rotin. Should be fantastic!

Paint Mahone Bay!

I'm taking part in Paint Mahone Bay again this year!

Last year I did it and it was so much fun. I ended up selling 8 paintings! It was the largest amount of sales I had ever had especially in one weekend!

If you are around Mahone Bay the weekend of July 12th and 13th be sure to stop by and pick up some beautiful art and well as some goregous landscape!

I call it forbidden treasure! Thought I would post something for the July First holiday weekend.
I can hardly believe it is almost July. It seems like we just barely finished winter and now summer is roaring through.
I have to say that the Etsy secrets coupon site got me quite a few sales. It was worth it, but I did do a two for one which is always a great deal. People tended to buy two and got two free.

My latest bracelet design incorporates freswater pearls with Swarovski crystals. You've gotta love the bright rainbow of colours that freshwater pearls are available in these days. I was able to snag these gorgeous purple freshwater pearls from one of my favorite suppliers.

I heard from an organizer of this event today and I thought I'd pass along the information in case anyone is interested!

This will be taking place on July 19th (Saturday) at the Quispamsis Civic Center in Quispamsis, NB from 8am - 3pm. Table rental for this event is $40 with an extra $10 if you require an electrical hookup.

Admission is $3 for adults and kids are free. They will have door prize draws and a 50/50 draw as well.

I don't know about you, but I sure do love this time of year! The fresh cut lawns, leaves on the trees and flowers blooming again all gives me an invigorating outlook on life and great things to come.

I've been spending a few extra minutes I have had (thanks to spring cleaning and renovations!) on promoting my shop, and drawing up some new ideas I want to have for September for what will be my first show. Also, spent some extra time marketing and promoting AprilsFlowers which has payed off remarkably well!

A couple things I have right now are a few extras I add to my tongs packages, seashell toothpicks tied with a ribbon and a tag with my web address for one. I've received wicked feedback and a few repeat customers because of it!

I was thinking maybe we could pull together some EAPST promotional things together to add to packages we send out. Maybe we can brainstorm some ideas, and anyone who might be interested could add something to it!

Back at it...

I've been sucking at Etsy these days. I've busy with my thesis, so there hasn't been time for making things. I brought what monkeys I did have to Love, Me and had left my etsy empty and alone. But today I got back at it! Only two little guys went up, but it's a start.

Here's a question for everyone: If Etsy is something you do on the side, where/how do you find the time to make things?

I have had other craft projects lately (a quilt and Sock Wars III), but between those and school, I haven't really managed to make much. While I'd love to devote my time to etsy, it's sadly not in the cards right now. I think I might need a personal assistant to help plan my days for me. ;)

Hi everyone. I am planning an art/craft show for September 13, 2008 at St John the Evangelist Church hall in Lower Sackville Nova Scotia. I am looking for a total of 15 exhibitors, and 4 booked already. The idea behind the show is to create a venue for local artists to show and sell their work with out a large investment. Hi everyone, I have a question I'm hoping one of you can answer. I was invited to take a booth at the 18th annual Buskers Festival/Saint Johns Harbour Festival in NB on July 18-20th. I'm wondering if any of you have attended this festival or had a booth at it in recent years? I would love to go but it will probably cost me over $600 to go over for the three days as I am in PEI. The marketing director I have been speaking with says over 20,000 people go through. Just wondering if anyone has an opinion on whether it is worth it or not. Thanks in advance!

First up is Bella McBride of New Brunswick. This very talented crocheter says, "Hello and Welcome to Bella McBride Designs where I try to add a touch of whimsy to everyday life. My goal is to use simple crochet techniques, so anybody can follow my patterns, but use colours and layers to achieve that special look. I hope you enjoy looking around and come back any time!" Bella shares her patterns in her Etsy store, as well as finished items, like the felted hat and bag pictured above.

Shawn of Island Sweet joins up from Corner Brook, Newfoundland. "i am a visual artist living and working on the west coast of newfoundland, canada. with over 30 years experience as a painter, i now take my passion for colour and design into many forms of craft including rug hooking, painting on wooden objects, sewing and knitting." That's clear from her delicious knit work, including her six foot long "Pink Petal Scarf", pictured above!

Celtic Crossing is from Nova Scotia (those are her lovely jade wirewrapped earrings, above). She is a jewellery maker and a Reiki master! "I am also a Reiki Master, and so with each piece of jewelry I make it is infused with positive energy before it leaves my hands and is sent onto you!" Welcome to APST, where we welcome all the positive energy we can get :)

And last, but not least is Sonia of VervainDesigns from Halifax, Nova Scotia. The beautiful painting, above, is titled "Cast me gently into morning". As she says in her profile, "Vervain Designs consists of what ever my sister and I are feeling in the mood for. We paint, we sew, we create. Please stop by from time to time to see what we have going on."

Open House?

Has anyone successfully organized an open house at their own place of residence? I'm thinking that fall would be a great time to try this with the Christmas shopping season starting up. I did one a couple of weeks ago while I was home visiting my parents and made over $600 which was pretty good for me since I don't have any items priced over $10. I had everything set up at my mom's office for a couple of hours and it was pretty busy.

The second question would be are any of you interested in taking part in this sort of thing? Especially if you're in the Saint John area. I'm willing to offer up my condo as a selling location. I was thinking light refreshments and then different areas for each vendor. Of course I only have about 700 square feet but I think it would make a nice, intimate setting.

Mudder's Day 2008!

Okay, okay, I've succumbed to wedding fever. No, I'm not getting married, myself (David and I are pretty happily unmarried, all things considered) -- but I'm making wedding jewellery.

Or at least, jewellery which could be seen as being bridal in colour and styling :)

I generally like pretty strong colours, so when I decided to make some bridal pretties, I realized that I had hardly any clear or white beads. That prompted a trip to my very favourite bead store, which is conveniently located in Bridgewater, just 12 km away from my home on the South Shore of Nova Scotia.

Liz at Java Bead is always really helpful, and she pointed me towards some very cool round aurora borealis beads that are, get this, MATTE. Modern and blingy at the same time -- I was in heaven. I combined them with some pretty "milk glass" flowers I bought from an Etsy seller, and the result is sweet without being syrupy.

Maybe I could get into this whole wedding thing! Oh, David ... !

We have two new members to welcome today -- first is Yvonne from Westville, NS, who runs Blacksheep Bodyworks. From her shop announcement: "We've been making soap for the last 12 years now and over that time have seen many soapers come and go. It is a great way to promote your shop. The only drawback is that you have to be able to giveaway $80. worth of merchandise and that is hard for those who just sell small items. For me it translates into 4 prints. Two certificates for 2 prints. The bonus is that you get TONS of traffic and publicity for your shop. In order to be eligible for a prize, a person has to visit your shop and then write down their fave item. It has just been up since this morning and already there are 140+ entries.
It will be interesting to see how it goes. One thing that has been fascinating to me is to see which prints are the most popular. Anyway pop over and have a look and enter if you would like:)

Welcome Wilburforce of Halifax! "Named after an extra special animal, who has hand tested some of my pet related items, the Wilbur store embodies a love of texture and color manipulated through various fiber media as well as works on paper. You’ll find one of a kind felted bowls, jeweled toned crocheted neck-laces, felted bracelets, bird shaped cats toys, as well as works in watercolor and photography."

Luv2Have, of PEI, is a member of the Creative Glass Guild of Etsy, and does amazing work in fused glass. She says "Making jewelry is my passion. I have tried just about every technique out there, but my favorite at the moment is fused glass."

Branch Designs, from northern NB, specializes in "pots, jewellery and bags with character". There's a wonderful example pictured above! In her profile she says of herself, "My name is Sarah Branch. I'm happily living back in my hometown with my husband, little daughter and crazy (seriously) cat named toad." She's a recent grad from the NB College of Craft and Design.

Another cat lover joining the Team is Haligonian DM Laughlin, who runs two Etsy stores: orangecrushed (for folk art and other art) and junquetrunque (for antique paper destash). She says of herself, "Hello and welcome to my world of whimsy. I represent several artists and carvers. Me? I am a dabbler. As I collect post cards, vintage paper and ephemera, when the piles start growing..I start cutting! I am also a mom and fulltime scientist. Yes, I can multitask too."

And, finally, we welcome Jane Rovers, photographer, who says of herself, "My artwork is primarily photography based. I enjoy hiking, camping,traveling and exploring new places. I take my camera everywhere I go. All of my pieces are original and unique. I have created each piece from my own original photographs. The photographs are digitally altered and transferred onto a surface. Each piece varies from the next in texture and appearance."

This month we welcome Cerra, who lives in Halifax. This talented crafter loves working with her hands and seems to enjoy bright colours (see her beautiful necklace, above)! She says, "I'm 23 years old and I've had a passion for making things with my hands for as long as I can remember. Recently, sharing that passion has become important to me."

We also welcome Snazz, who's also from Halifax! She enjoys working with fabric (as evidenced by the clutch in the above photo) and has this to say about herself: "I am a stay at home mom of two young boys ( aged four and seven). In the times of brief respite between cooking, cleaning, chauffeuring, conflict resolution and all that other stuff you never noticed your mom doing for you… I like to sew."

Christina Hill, of New Brunswick, says of herself: "I live and love to create. I am always busy doing something, often much later into the night than is healthy. I love all kinds of crafts and have always had a very open spirit about learning new skills. My creative passions include paperie crafting, needlepoint, design, decor and making life a beautiful place to be regardless of where you are."

And, finally, long-time Etsian Enthral joins us from Halifax. Enthral reworks vintage and recycled components into jewellery, hair accessories and cufflinks. She says, "am a full time teacher (on mat leave) and mother living in Nova Scotia, Canada. I have been making jewelery for a few years, and find that it is a great creative outlet. I enjoy using refashioned vintage items and recycled bits and pieces in my work."
